What is a credit union?

A profit sharing, democratically run financial co-operative which offers convenient savings and low interest loans to its members.  Members own and manage the credit union themselves.

What are the benefits of a credit union?

• An easy and convenient way to save and borrow
• Very low cost loans
• The first £85,000 of savings are protected by the Government's Financial Services and Compensation Scheme
• Insurance at no direct cost

Who can join a credit union?

Anyone covered by the “common bond”.  You could reside in a specified area, work for a particular employer or are a member of a club or association. Credit unions welcome everybody in the common bond regardless of income, employment status or age.  This leaflet only lists credit unions with a residence based common bond.  If you are working, your employer may operate a credit union for its employees.  Or you can approach a CDFI regarding a loan (details below).
