New plans for development at St Peter’s Church in Bryn/Wigan.

New plans for development at St Peter’s Church in Bryn/Wigan.

Jigsaw Homes Group has been working closely with Wigan Borough Council, Homes England, the Heaton Group and Studio KMA architects to help bring another affordable homes development to Wigan.

The Group’s plans for the new homes will help address the significant increase in demand for affordable housing across the borough, and bring a vacant brownfield site in Bryn back into sustainable use.

One of the founding members of Jigsaw Group, Adactus Housing Association, has a long standing commitment to the borough, with a great track record of providing a mix of sustainable homes that meet the local demand and wider neighbourhood needs.

Having listened to feedback from local consultation, new plans were drawn up and these were submitted on behalf of Adactus Housing Association.  The revised scheme will provide a mixed model of housing, incorporating 10 much needed family homes, comprising of:

  • 7 x two bedroom homes
  • 3 x three bedroom town houses

Aimed at meeting the needs of future residents, these quality new homes will all be available for affordable rent and allocated to local families with a housing need and a connection to the area of Bryn.

The proposed architectural design will feature traditional brickwork with stone window sills, bay windows and entrance canopies, in keeping with, and enhancing the overall visual quality and character of the neighbourhood.

The development will also include 11 apartments +1 staff apartment for people needing some support in reaching full independence. The accommodation will be for people who have experienced a crisis in their life, such as domestic abuse or losing their home. Crucially, they will have previously been open to and worked hard with support and are deemed ready to gain their independence and move on. With staff available 24/7 this is a very successful model that has helped change the lives of people such as Imogen, who lived in one of the association’s similar homes in Wigan. She said: “I’ve just gone into my third and final year at University, I have landed my ‘DREAM JOB’ working with children and young people who have mental health issues and autism. Overall life has turned out better than I imagined, so I just wanted to say thanks to all the staff for all the help and support they gave me.”

The homes will benefit from high-quality landscaped private gardens and external communal spaces. There will be ample car parking provision that will include accessible bays and electric vehicle charge points. Secure cycle parking and refuse/recycling storage has also been incorporated in the plans.

Studio KMA Architects and the Heaton Group, who originally introduced the Group to this site and will be the Land and Build contractors, are working closely to the key principles that aim to deliver developments that:

  • create a positive sense of place that people can identify.
  • promote activity and safe social interaction.
  • provide attractive external spaces.
  • provide a high quality internal and external environment.
